But at the same time, it should be remembered that the repair of the log house, if necessary, must be done as quickly as possible. The main enemy of wood, after fire, is rot. If a focus of biological damage has appeared in the house, then after a while a significant part of it may suffer. Fortunately, log house repair is not too difficult and can be done very quickly and without great expense.
Repair or replace rims
First of all, you need to determine how rational the repair will be. There are situations when it is more expedient to dismantle the old building, and build a new one in its place. Often this solution helps to save time, and even budget. But if you decide to firmly engage in restoration, then you should carefully examine the log house. It is necessary to identify crowns that have rotted by more than 30% in thickness. This is the ultimate degree of safety, after which the element is no longer subject to repair.
If the thickness of the whole wood in the log allows repair, then you should arm yourself with an ax and chisels. They work like this:
- Rotten places are carefully selected to whole wood.
- The tree is treated with an antiseptic;
- Make an insert of wood, suitable in size and shape. They fix such a part with nails or self-tapping screws.
- After mounting, the element is cut flush with the crown from above.
If the crowns cannot be repaired, then you need to order new ones and replace them completely. It is important to remember that for any operations with the walls and foundations of the log house, you need to remove the windows in advance. If this is not done, then an accidental skew of the building can lead to glass cracking and even frame breakage.
Gap Elimination
Very often a log house repair involves patching cracks and grooves. If a gap has formed in the log, it must be filled with a special putty so that it does not become a breeding ground for the spread of the fungus. If it blows through the walls, then this means that there are gaps and grooves between the crowns that need your attention. There are several ways to do the job:
- Caulking, that is, filling the voids between the elements of the log house with moss or tow;
- Sealant is a modern method using effective building materials.
Before making caulk, moss or tow is soaked in water for about 30-40 minutes. Then the material is removed from the container, twisted into bundles and laid between the crowns. For maximum compaction, use a hammer or mallet. When the caulking rollers are laid, they are left to dry for three days and only then they are carefully cut. It is important to remember that the insulation should not pass through the wall! If desired, over the caulking, you can seal the seams with putty or plaster.
Before filling gaps with sealant, they are also filled with tow or jute caulk. After that, a sealant is applied from a pistol or a spatula and carefully pushed into the defects. It is not necessary to fill the gap to the brim – it is enough that the composition touches the wood in two places and connects two parts or parts thereof. After filling the gaps, you need to let the sealant harden for 6 – 8 hours. Only after that you can proceed to further processing, for example, painting.
