    Дополнительная информация

When building a new house, people do not often use the space under the roof for an attic or storage of unnecessary things. If you make a small alteration and spend a minimum of finance, you will end up with an additional room. However, in order for the resulting room to be suitable for living in winter, attic insulation is required.

Advantages of the attic as a living space

At the moment, many owners of a private house use the attic as a living space. And all because it has the following advantages:

    1. The attic can be used for a creative workshop, playroom or as a place to meet friends.
    2. If the attic is well insulated, it makes it possible to significantly reduce heating and energy costs.
    3. Profitability, when compared with an ordinary frame floor. The fact is that for the construction of the attic it is not necessary to make additional finances – the roof in this case acts as the outer skin of the surfaces of the inner walls, and the frames for the walls are built using rafters.

In addition, the attic can become another additional bedroom in the house, for example, for guests. But this is only if you think in advance about the insulation of this room.

    Do-it-yourself attic insulation

If you decide to insulate your house, it means that you have thought about the fact that you will live in it all year round.

What elements does an insulated roof consist of? Let’s list in order:

    • The main roof covering is slate, metal tiles, siding and so on. The main task of these materials is to prevent moisture from entering the house.
    • The next layer is waterproofing. For this, roofing material or a special film is used that retains moisture well and does not allow steam to pass through. The waterproofing is laid so that moisture does not flow down it, it is brought out.
    • Next comes the insulation. For this layer, a porous material is used, such as foam or glass wool. This layer provides the main protection against cold air temperatures.
    • Vapor barrier – a film that does not let water and steam through, protecting the thermal insulation layer from strong moisture. The air in the house is always slightly humid. This is why vapor barrier is considered important.

The last layer is the finish. For finishing work, they most often use: drywall, plywood, chipboard. These sheets are fixed on rafters or a metal frame. The latter option looks much neater and more beautiful. The only negative is that the volume of rooms may decrease due to the metal frame.

Attic insulation: what materials are used?

Attic insulation is performed using the following materials:

    1. Styrofoam. If compared with mineral wool, then it is better to choose it. Although foam plastic has the property of retaining heat, it can often be subject to rodent invasions. Be that as it may, polystyrene is used in construction quite often. To obtain a warmer room, the material is laid in 2 layers. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase sheets with a thickness of 5 cm. They are laid between the rafters so that the joints of one product do not coincide with the joints of another product.
    2. Mineral wool. There are two types (can be supplied in rolls and sheets). The second option is considered better, since the sheets keep their own shape and, after a while, do not sag. Mineral wool is also laid in 2 layers.

Also, polystyrene foam is often used for insulation. The installation process is the same as for foam.

We recommend ordering the presented service from House Wood specialists.
