Warming the house from the outside is a job, after the completion of which the inside of the room becomes much warmer. After all, in this case, heat losses through the walls and window openings are reduced to a minimum, if the work is performed correctly. Insulation is especially needed for thin walls and buildings made of material that does not retain heat well. The most favorable period for carrying out work on the insulation of the house is from April to September. However, it often happens that insulation has to be done when winter has already arrived. Let’s figure out at what temperature such work can be carried out.
Temperature during the wet method of warming houses
The main problem of performing work on the insulation of the house from the outside during the cold season is low temperature and high humidity, due to which glues and mastics freeze or dry poorly. They are used in the wet method of insulation, which is based on gluing the insulating material to the walls. Moreover, the glue is used twice here. The second time, it is needed for fastening the reinforcing mesh, which is used for the finishing coating. If it is plaster, the process also involves the use of water.
The need to use liquid materials imposes restrictions on the temperature of the external environment at which work can be performed. It should not be lower than +5 °С. If special materials and modern frost-resistant additives are used, the permissible limit for work will be -5 °С. When the air temperature outside is below this mark, there are two possibilities:
- construction of a protective circuit;
- performance of insulation by dry method.
The protective contour is a film that is stretched over the installed scaffolding. It should completely cover the area on which insulation is carried out. Thanks to the contour, its own microclimate is established inside – warmer than outside. If it is necessary to increase the temperature, heat guns are turned on inside the circuit. Also, the contour protects the working surfaces from possible precipitation.
Dry method – no restrictions even in winter
Dry facade insulation technology is more suitable for the cold season, as it does not use liquid materials. It consists of the following:
- construction of a wooden or metal crate into which insulation is inserted;
- placement in the insulation frame;
- closing the upper layer with a moisture-resistant membrane;
- execution of the finishing coating.
Siding is often used as a finishing coating. At the same time, all fastening work is performed with the help of self-tapping screws or hardware, that is, there is no reason to dry out and freeze here. Therefore, in fact, the dry method of insulation has no temperature restrictions. Of course, if it’s -50 °C outside, it’s simply not comfortable for people to do this.
What to pay attention to!
If it’s cold and you still decide to insulate the house from the outside, the weather conditions in the region must be taken into account when choosing a method. The best option is to use dry technology and carry out work when there is no precipitation. If, according to the forecast, the temperature will stay in the plus zone for a long time, you can choose the wet method.
You should also choose the right insulation. It should have low thermal conductivity, good air permeability and moisture resistance. These requirements are met by mineral wool and expanded polystyrene. It is important that these materials are inexpensive, so they are often used for insulation.
If there are no restrictions in monetary units, and the dry method is chosen, you can use fibrolite or cork boards as insulation. These materials have additional advantages: resistance to damage, good noise insulation, long service life. When planning insulation in the cold season, everything down to the smallest nuances is taken into account, the work will be done quickly and efficiently.
